Mathematics Curriculum

Utilizing Montessori materials, students progress from a concrete to an abstract understanding of the four basic operations. Students work at their own pace, while receiving individual and group lessons. Beginning with numeration and moving into the four basic operations, students continue to build their own foundation for mathematical thinking.

As children transition from Lower Elementary to Upper Elementary, they will experience a sense of familiarity with most of the mathematics manipulatives, and be introduced to new ones. It is this concrete foundation allowing students to easily progress into abstract concepts typically taught at a later age. Once they internalize a specific math concept, they can then move on to abstract problem solving. In addition to manipulatives, we use several variations of workbook/worksheet materials. They are used for homework and classwork to support our curriculum.

The Middle School Mathematics curriculum begins the work of higher mathematics (Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry). Students use textbooks, activity labs and hands on, minds-on activities. The emphasis will be on preparing students for success in advanced high school mathematics courses. Standardized testing strategies and practice will be included in all Middle School Mathematics courses. We will explore mathematics by visiting local businesses to explore practical applications in every day working life.
