The Elementary curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing reading and writing skills. Students receive lessons and choose work designed to strengthen these skills. They also work through sequences in spelling, grammar and word study.
First year students work on becoming fluent readers, while older students develop skills to become proficient, competent readers. All children practice communicating orally and through writing. Students learn to brainstorm and edit their writing to publish final drafts of their work. Through hands on activities, the children learn and use the nine parts of speech in their work. Reading and novel groups are a regular part of our classroom routine. Other key focuses of the elementary language curriculum are: phonemic awareness, word study, language mechanics, handwriting, spelling, poetry, plays, short stories, oral expression, and research skills.
